Awarded for distinguishing himself with his Batterie during the fighting at the Soviet bridgehead over the Narew river at Rozan. Here, in the sector of the 541. Volksgrenadier-Division, the Soviets managed to penetrate the German frontline at Szygi. In response Oberleutnant John launched a counterattack with his Sturmgeschütze, which succeeded in destroying multiple enemy tanks and preventing a breakthrough.
