He has distinguished himself in combat against the enemy during the fighting near Rhenen on May 12 and 13, 1940, by frequently repositioning his guns himself under enemy fire and, in frequent contact with his gun commanders, having maintained the fighting power and the morale of his men at a high level, as well as in a rear guard action near Leersum against a superior enemy whereby he was killed.
