For having displayed during guerilla warfare in the Vogelkop area on Dutch New Guinea outstanding courage, tactful conduct and endurance, although having been attacked frequentlyby superior enemy forces, always inflicting heavy losses to the enemy. When on patrol, being attacked by a large superior number of Japanse and having been injured himself, covering the retreat of the patrol and by enabling his comrades to escape, he died.
