"Awarded while his assault gun battalion was attached to the 112. Infanterie-Division. Following fierce defensive action northeast of Bolchov, the division had to retreat to Karachev to avoid being overrun and destroyed. The attached assault guns succeeded in keeping the Soviet armoured spearheads at bay until the German infantry had successfully retreated and was ready for further action. Zieger and his company were particularly successful in these rearguard actions, and he was recognized appropriately."
