1st Battalion Royal Northumberland Fusiliers, Palestine Command, British Army

"On 26th February 1939 a reconnaissance party was fired on by rebels near Shuba. Captain Enderby in charge of two Sections moved in pursuit and found himself exposed on forward slopes, and under fire from the enemy rear party from positions of cover. He seized a rifle from the first man who came up and, advancing on the enemy, himself killed two and wounded the third. The leadership displayed, and the cool action of this officer under fire, were entirely responsible for the success of this operation."
Recommended by Lt Col J.H. Hogshaw, CO 1 RNF
Military Cross (MC)
"During the action of CALABRITTO 1-7 Dec 43 this officer was commanding 2/5 Bn Leicesters.
During the first five days the Bn had failed twice to take its objective and has been subjected to severe shelling and mortaring and had suffered considerable casualties. In addition the weather was appalling, filling all slit trenches and soaking all men right through. Little sleep was had by anyone during this time.
Under these conditions Lt Col Enderby was ordered to take his objective on the evening of 6 Dec. Rising superior to all difficulties he made a first class plan which entailed the co-operation of all arms including tanks. And then, regardless of his personal safety, supervised its successful culmination by his leading Company.
His planning, action, bravery and leadership were of the very highest order, resulting in the capture and consolidation of the final objective, the capture of nearly 100 prisoners and much booty, and opening the way for the ultimate success of the Division."
