"During the fighting on the River SOMME and BRESLE this Officer was senior Combatant Officer at DIEPPE. He showed initiative and good powers of organisation in arrariging for the local defence of Dieppe. Although the town was very heavily bombed and several occasions he always showed calmness and determination in dealing with the situation, and set an excellent example to the Garrison.
This officer has shown conspicious ability as D.A.A. & Q.M.G. DIeppe Sub-Area.
When the military situation became critical, he took a large part in the organisation of defense measures and worked untiringly night and day. His work in organizing the evacuation of personnel and stores from Dieppe Sub-Area was beyond praise. Throughout the period of bombing attacks on Dieppe and during the tense periods when the threat of actual attack was always present, he set a magnificent example of coolness and courage.
I feel that the work of Lt-Col. Pinder deserves special recognition as I had ample opportunity to recognize his splendid steadiness and resolution throughout our Dieppe SUb Area cricis. To my merit at least the award of the D.S.O. , and I hope that this will be considered. Pinder thoughout this period as senior Staff Officer of Dieppe Sub Area had shown the greatest loyalty to me, and long before the crisis I had formed a very high opinion of his works, which was fully confirmed when things got nasty."

"Brigadier Pinder landed in NORTH AFRICA with the first flight and at once was faced with the task of organizing the town of ALGIERS as a base port. This never-ending task he has accomplished with rare success, gifted as he is with a thorough military knowledge, considerable common sense, and also great tact and charm which enable him to deal successfully with both Allies, higher Headquarters and senior officers alike.
He is completely unruffled by the many and urgent problems by which he is daily beset, and his serenity gives confidence to all with whom he comes in contact. He is certainly a round peg in a round hole."
