"Sgt Macdonald set a very fine example of personal courage during the fighting at Kampar on 1st, 2nd & 3rd Jan 42. His position was several times attacked and intermittently subjected to intense mortar fire and on all occasions Sgt. MacDonald remained cool and determined and it was largely his cheerfulness and encouragement which rallied his men to holding on.

On 3rd Jan 42, on of his men was so severely wounded that he was unable to move from where he was lying in an exposed position in the valley. Sgt. MacDonald made his way to this man under heavy rifle fire and when he found it impossible to extricate the man gave him water before he died. This NCO only got back to his position with great difficulty, owing to the enemy fire.

His conduct throughout the operation has shown him to be a very good leader an a very brave man."
Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM)
