Awarded the Knight’s Cross for his Kompanie’s defense of a hill southwest of Marinkowka (on the Mius front) on the 19.07.1943. Here Oberleutnant Kautz and his men defended against numerous enemy tanks while being under constant bombardment by hostile artillery and aircraft. In the fighting on this day Kautz personally knocked out 2 enemy tanks with magnetic AT grenades after he had wiped out their escorting infantry with his sub-machine gun. Three days later, on the 22.07.1943, he would die in battle during the fighting in this sector.

Awarded posthumously.
