The following wartime excerpt (dated 28.01.1943) describes why Lindemann received the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberst Lindemann defended a strongpoint near Toropez with only weak forces available at his disposal.”

This action began on the 26.11.1942, during Operation Mars. Lindemann and his Regiment were deployed in the Lutschessa valley and Lindemann was given operational control of this area’s defense. Two days later the Soviets renewed their attack in this area with many soldiers and about 200 tanks. Under Lindemann’s command however this new assault was successfully contained, and the situation was later resolved completely by counterattacking Panzer forces.
