Captain SS Soemba

The Soemba left on December 23, 1940 with a load of ingots and pike iron from Philadelphia via Halifax to England. Difficulties had already arisen regarding the method of loading. Sailing in a convoy, the Soemba capsized on January 5, 1941 during heavy storms, possibly partly as a result of a sudden evasive maneuver. Captain Leguit and 35 crew members lost their lives in that disaster.
