Kommandeur, 1. Gebirgs-Division, Heer

Awarded for his leadership of the 1. Gebirgs-Division during the Polish campaign. During this time he led the Division through a series of successful battles from its jump off positions in Slovakia to its objective of Lemberg, of which the following were particularly noteworthy…

09.09.1939: Kübler leads the northern group of the Division across the San river, taking the Polish defenders at Sanok in the rear and destroying them. Through this action he was able to create an all-important bridgehead over the river and deny the Poles the important railway line through the city.

11.09.1939: Küber led his men through a Polish ambush at Dobrowka, eliminated its garrison and pressed on to Sambor.

12.09.1939: On this day the long advance of the 1. Gebirgs-Division commenced from Sambor to Lemberg, bringing the Division far to the east of the rest of the Armee. In total the (non-motorized) southern elements of the Division covered 60-70 kilometers in one day and the motorized elements covered 110 kilometres. From its newly won ground here the Division was able to prevent the escape of considerable Polish elements coming from Przemysl-Janow and Lemberg in the coming days. This translated to a total of over 20000 prisoners, numerous guns and 300 machine guns plus numerous other weapons being captured due to the actions of the Division.
