Biography

Werner Witte served as I.Wachoffizier on "U 109, before he was appointed Kommandeur "U 509" in September 1942. During three operational sails (196 days at sea) he sunk a total of three ships with a combined tonnage of 36.220BRT and damaged three others with a total of 20.014BRT. He was killed in action when his ship was sunk on July 15th, 1943 near Madeira at 34.02N / 26.01W by the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Santee (Convoi AHL54).
