The following wartime excerpt describes why Böhme was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Generalleutnant Franz Böhme decisively influenced both the crossing over the Maas river on both sides of Givet and the breakthrough of the Maginot Line west of Chimay through his exemplary devotion to duty as well as the confident, swift and energetic leadership of his Division. Later on he was temporarily assigned the command of an Armee-Korps, and while in this role he conducted reconnaissance for the planned crossing of Marne river by two of his Divisionen on both sides of Dorman. He did this in such a way that both divisions were able to successfully force the river and produce a decisive breakthrough with strong forces. Here Generalleutnant Böhme again showed himself to be a brave leader while under fire, and he decisively influenced the course of the combat through his overall attitude.”
