Awarded for his actions on the 23.02.1945 while unit was involved in defensive combat around Jülich. On this day Allied forces managed to penetrate into Bäder’s mortar position. However, following a German artillery barrage in this area, Bäder was able to eject the Allied troops that had broken into the position. He conducted this attack on his own initiative, and by doing so he succeeded in recapturing his two still operational mortars and their corresponding ammunition.
