Lothar Berger had a strong personal commitment to the Meuse crossing and the breakthrough due to the fortifications in Belgium a major part in the success of his battalion. For that he received as Major the Knight's Cross as one of the first soldiers of the army. He acquired the oak leaves as Commander of the brigade eg 100 and as commander of Opole on the Eastern Front. In Soviet and British captivity until July 1946.

The following wartime excerpt describes why Berger was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Major Berger, the commander of the III./Infanterie-Regiment 84, has shown exemplary devotion to duty and led his men to decisive victories. The first of these was during the crossing of the Maas river near Yvoir (14.05.1940) with his designated assault Kompanien, which had been strongly impressed by their first encounter with truly heavy enemy fire. The second such victory was achieved during the penetration of the fortified works near Berelles, located along the French-Belgian border, on the 17.-18.05.1940.”
