On the 18.01.1943 the Soviets entered into the village of Tschebetowka (near Millerovo) from the south along with tank support. Soviet infantry established themselves in the southern part of the village and began an advance against the train station.

At this time Oberleutnant Böhrendt was conducting a reconnaissance probe, and as he was doing so he spotted a battalion-sized Soviet force preparing for battle in a ravine east of Tschebetowka. He got into the rear of this force with a half Zug of Flak guns and opened fire on the Soviets despite his vast numerical inferiority. The Soviet battalion lost over 100 dead, 6 trucks as well as several mortars and MGs. The remainder of the unit was scattered to the four winds.

By smashing this hostile formation Oberleutnant Böhrendt produced significant relief for the German situation in Tschebetowka. He was consequently awarded the Knight’s Cross a short while after.
