Awarded for the achievements of his 1./Sturmgeschütz-Brigade 202 during the fighting for the Baltic Islands in late 1944. He and his men particularly distinguished themselves during a nine-day period of combat on the Sworbe peninsula (on the island of Ösel). In this time the Batterie destroyed 54 Soviet tanks, relieved the encircled 9./Artillerie-Regiment 218 and eliminated numerous Soviet penetrations at the cost of minimal friendly losses.

By this time Brandt had also personally destroyed 35 enemy tanks.
