The following press excerpt (dated 16.04.1943) describes why Fellmann was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Hauptmann Fellmann… had a major share in the success of the attack south of Lake Ilmen that was reported in the Wehrmachtbericht of 03.04.1943. At the time he was serving in a Pomeranian Grenadier Bataillon as its commander. In this battle he penetrated through the enemy’s main line of battle, thrust through to a village and captured it after eight hours of close combat.”
This action took place on the 30.03.1943. On this day Grenadier-Regiment 409 launched an attack against the village of Penna. In the ensuing combat Fellmann’s II. Bataillon overran a strong enemy position, reached the village edge at 07:10 and had achieved contact with the northern group of the 5. Jäger-Division by 09:25.
During this attack Hauptmann Fellmann personally led the Bataillon’s 6. Kompanie. With this unit he rolled up the southernmost Russian line and captured about 40 prisoners. After the ordered attack objective was already reached at 06:00, Hauptmann Fellmann then swept the Penna ravine from the east to the west on his own initiative. Bunker after bunker was captured, and by 15:00 Penna was firmly in German hands.
Hauptmann Fellmann would receive the Knight’s Cross for his role in this attack, which pushed back the Soviets from the Staraya-Russa—Cholm road.
