Albert A. Svoboda, 0-103869, Lieutenant Colonel, 135th Infantry, for extraordinary heroism in action on 30 April 1943, in Tunisia. As commander of the 2nd Battalion, Colonel Svoboda was assigned the mission of taking Hill 461. Under heavy enemy machine gun and artillery fire, he personally led his heavy weapons platoon into position against the enemy. He then moved forward to the leading elements of his battalion, and utterly disregarding his own safety, directed their action and fire. His courage, bravery and coolness under fire inspired his men, contributed greatly to the accomplishment of his objective and stand as an example of the highest traditions of the Service.
