According to a wittness account by collegue Frans Steinsdörfer, Günther Schmidt was killed in action as a member of 6. / SS-Panzer-Regiment 1 "Leibstandartte der SS Adolf Hitler", on July 11th or 13th, 1943 in the area of Bjelgorod-Kursk.
