His unit was ambushed while on reconnaissance in enemy held territory on October 4th, 1942. Despite the fact that his opponents were vastly superieur, he refused to surrender and fought until the last bullet. He only let his weapons fall into enemey hands after they had been spiked. He was the only survivor of his 19 strong unit. His right leg was amputated.
