On the night of 14/15.06.1940 Leutnant Schneege received the order to capture a group of bunkers/earthen positions with the regimental Pionierzug and then advance towards the Püttlingen reservoir. To the southeast he he noticed a dam over the reservoir, and decided to try and cross the 200 m reservoir via it. However, after Schneege led the way by cutting through a barbed wire obstacle his platoon came under fire from a well camouflaged bunker at the dam. Schneege was hit once, and then again in the head, killing him. For his bravery he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
Awarded posthumously.
