On the 28.07.1944 the Soviets managed to penetrate the defenses of the 7./SS-Pz.Gren.Rgt. 24 (positioned along the Tannenberg line) with tanks in support. In response the commander ordered the Kompanie to pull back to a blocking position, but became a casualty shortly afterwards. In response Oberscharführer Hektor took over command of the Kompanie and directed that the position had to be held under all circumstances.

In the subsequent fighting the Kompanie managed to seal off the northern and southern penetrations and defend the position against all enemy attacks. In the process 7 enemy tanks were destroyed by close-combat weapons and another 3 by gunfire within the Kompanie sector. The Soviets thereafter called off their offensive.

For his efforts during this battle Hektor would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
