Memorial Belgian Refugee Cemetery Gouda

Between 1914 and 1919, thousands of Belgian refugees stayed in Vluchtoord Gouda.

This memorial on the wall of the Catholic Cemetery commemorates the 160 refugees who died during their stay in Gouda were buried in this cemetery.

The text on the memorial reads:
‘He who is not missed is not forgotten
Belgian refugees
1914-1918’

During World War I, around 1 million Belgians fled across the border to the Netherlands. About a hundred thousand of them stayed throughout the war and were mainly kept in large camps. These refugees were welcome but the conditions of reception were often austere and primitive.
