German War Graves Cemetery Friedhof Ohlsdorf Hamburg

Hamburg-Ohlsdorf Cemetery contains more than 50,000 war burials.

Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871):
Soldiers who died of wounds and sickness in military hospitals of Hamburg.

First World War:
More than 3,400 German soldiers

Interbellum:
61 revolutionaries who perished between 1918 and 1920

Second World War:
1,931 German soldiers
49 refugees
36,918 casualties of bombardments, died in 1943
2,282 casualties of other bombardments

In 1953, a Rotunda was built as a 'Monument to the Fallen of World War II', where wreaths were laid on the German National Day of Mourning to commemorate the fallen soldiers. After protests, this interpretation was widened to commemorate other groups of victims as well.
