"Sgt. Howard Edward Bird commanded #2 section of #5 pl, A coy, Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa (M) from D Day 6 Jun 44, until the end of hostilities 8 May 45. Throughout Sjt Bird’s service with A Coy he constantly displayed great personal courage, and magnificent leadership. This NCO, by his fearless actions, created an esprit de crops within his Section that proved a source of strength under the most trying conditions. His men would follow him anywhere. Not once throughout the campaigns in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany did Sjt Bird’s Section falter of fail. On the contrary they always displayed a keen offensive spirit, a spirit which in large part was created by their sjts example. On 17 April 1945 “A” Company was containing the enemy along the line of the Ijssel River near the town of Wijhe, Holland. Sjt Brid and two men from his section were given the task to patrolling across the Ijsel for the purpose of ascertaining the strength and disposition of the enemy troops opposite #5 Platoons position. Under cover of darkness Sjt Bird and his party slipped across the river. Having successfully penetrated the enemy lines Sjt Bird pushed on a distance of 5 miles to the North-West of the river. Here he decided to investigate a farm-house which showed signs of military occupation. Going forward alone Sjt Bird entered the house and found it occupied by four German soldiers. These he quickly disarmed and took prisoner, and brought them back through the enemy lines, across the river, and into #5 Platoon position. These prisoners together with Sjt Bird’s report yielded valuable information concerning the enemy’s positions. This is one example of the initiative and personal courage which were the price characteristics of this NCO."
