"Throughout the whole campaign in HOLLAND, Sergeant CAMPBELL’S record of meritorious service has, with the Essex Scottish Regiment, been outstanding. As a mortar fire controller he carried out his tasks with unfailing devotion to duty. On numerous occasions by exposing himself to enemy fire in order to observe the effect of his own weapons, he produced mortar support with great accuracy and effect at critical stages in the Regiments’ battles.
This was particularly so at GRONINGEN on the 16 April, 1945, when Sergeant CAMPBELL engaged an enemy held power plant near the town. So skilfully was the target subjected to mortar fire by Sergeant CAMPBELLS’ close observation, in spite of enemy small arms weapons, that an enemy Colonel and one hundred and twenty-one other ranks surrendered without further action by the Regiment.
Sergeant CAMPBELL’S cheerful willingness to carry out his duties has been an inspiration to his men.
Quick to accept the responsibilities of command, he has been an example of extreme loyalty and soldierly efficiency to all ranks of the Essex Scottish Regiment."
