Biography

Raymond was born on November 29 1919 in Melita Manitoba, the son of William Baumgarten (German) and Maria Baumgarten nee Lamport of Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. They were married on February 26 1902 in Shipka Ontario. His brother was Wilmer L. Baumgarten and Edgar Baumgarten died after 16 months in 1904 and his sister was Mildred R. Baumgarten.

He was a farmer at father’s farm and member of the United Church. His hobby was radio and his sports were baseball, skating and hockey.

He served from April 17 1941 till October 17 1941 with the No. 10 Clearing Depot of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of Canada. He enlisted on October 18 1941 then the RCAF in Winnipeg and he went thereafter on November 5 1942 overseas to the UK.

Raymond was killed in action on Thursday May 13 1943 age 23 due to a crash at the hamlet of Hasseleres near Deurningen/Weerselo before or after an attack on Duisburg in Germany. He was buried on May 15 1943 then in Deurningen. The other fallen RCAF crew members were F/Sgt Alan E. Hatch age 22 in grave 1-1-5, F/Sgt Charles C Hildreth age 21 in grave 1-1-5 and F/Sgt Douglas R. Horwood age 24 in grave 1-1-5. The other fallen RAF Volunteer Reserve crew member was Sgt William Leven age 20 in grave 1-1-5.

He and the other fallen crew members are mentioned since March 2020 at an information sign near the crash site on the occasion of 75 years of Freedom.

He served with the 428 Sqdn Royal Canadian Air Force.
