Milton C. Portmann Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His father Milton Portmann Sr. was a Major in the US Army from 1917-1919 serving in St. Mihiel/Meuse-Argonne in the 89th division 353rd Infantry. His brother, Richard "Dick" Portmann was a navigator of a B-17 in the Eighth Army Air Force in World War II. After high school, Milton enlisted in the USNR while attending school at Case Western in Ohio. He married his high school sweetheart, had a family, and resided in Lakewood, Ohio. In the late 1950's he moved with his family to Royal Oak, Michigan where he resided until his death in 1994.
