Rank:
Commandant (Major)
Unit:
Jedburgh Team Hugh, Special Operations Executive (SOE), British Government
Recommendation:
"This officer who volunteered for a special mission, was parachuted into the INDRE Department of France on 6th June 1944 in uniform.

During three-and-a-half month in enemy-occupied territory, together with his British comrades, he organised, trained and armed a resistance force of over 17,000 men in most difficult circumstances.

He continually toured a large circuit in uniform in a car with complete disregard for his personal safety, to arrange the distribution of arms, and to inspect the various formations, despite the presence of German patrols and check points. Capture involved certain death and torture.

He carried out many rail cuts, of which 500 were completed during June, thus bringing all rail traffic to a complete standstill.

He helped to organise an intelligence network of great value to the Allied command and continued work although in great pain most of the time from poisoned glands.

During the passage of over 100,000 Germans through INDRE and INDRE et LOIRE from the West, from the end of August to the middle of September he carried out continuous and dangerous reconnaissances and was largely responsible by his personal leadership and gallantry for the heavy casualties inflicted on the enemy.

On 27th August, 200 Maquis surrounded a detachment of 100 Germans guarding the road from ST. FLOVIER to ST. CYRAN to ensure the safe passage of a large German convoy. The Maquis were in their turn surrounded by German reinforcements. Commandant L'HELLGOUACH on being informed of the situation, passed through the enemy lines, took command and effected a successful break-out. The enemy losses were 51. The Maquis lost 12 killed and 27 wounded. By his initiative and gallantry Commandant L'HELLGOUACH saved the Maquis group from anihilation.

It is recommended that this officer be Appointed a Companion in the Distinguished Service Order."
