"For extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy on 19 and 20 September 1944, during the battle of Arnhem, Belgium. Major DeGex, although under heavy fire, organized and directed the artillery fire of his brigade with skill and determination. In the absence of the Brigade Major, Major DeGex assisted to a considerable degree in withdrawing the brigade successfully through the enemy's position in the face of extremely heavy mortar fire and hand to hand fighting. His excellent work throughout the battle was without doubt a major factor in the successful outcome of the particular operation."
