"For conspicuous gallantry in action. When an enemy machine gun was firing at point-blank range, he stood and fired at the gunners, killing the man on the gun; he then rushed forward and bayoneted another man who was bringing the gun into action again, thus allowing the advance to continue. Later he went into the enemy’s positions, and returned with an officer and six other prisoners. Throughout the operations he showed splendid courage, and captured at least twenty-five prisoners and two machine guns."
