Awarded for his actions on the 18.12.1941. At this time the 260. Infanterie-Division was located in the Kremenki bridgehead, but its men were exhausted due to the non-stop fighting they had to endure. On this day Labrenz and his Bataillon came under a heavy Soviet attack near Jerschowo but were able to hold their ground. Although Labrenz himself was wounded in the process the significance of his achievement was not lost on his superiors, and he received the Knight’s Cross very shortly afterwards.

The following wartime excerpt provides a summary of this actions as follows…

“In order to hold the torn-apart frontline the Division had deployed all its available forces. Only one infantry Bataillon was kept on the right wing, as a strong enemy attack was being prepared there. The troops were at the end of their strength due to the non-stop fighting, but the enemy gave them no respite. Labrenz’s Bataillon came under a heavy enemy attack supported by 30 tanks. However in the subsequent back-and-forth engagement Hauptmann Labrenz succeeded in inspiring his men to fight on time and again. He eliminated the numerous enemy penetrations via counterthrusts with hastily gathered squads and ultimately held the position despite heavy losses in men and materiel.”
