March 3rd, 1943
Awarded for his actions on the southern sector of the Eastern front in early 1943. On the 28.01.1943, after the Soviets achieved a deep penetration in the direction of Voroshilovgrad, List and his Bataillon were thrown against the Soviet forces. Starting on the morning of the 31.01.1943 List and his men held their ground against uninterrupted Soviet attacks supported by tanks and artillery. They did this without any prepared field positions or significant help from heavy weapons. Nonetheless they repelled every hostile attack and destroyed 5 tanks in the process. For his leadership as well as the heroic efforts of his Bataillon, which was suffering in any case from overexertion in the cold weather, List would be recognized accordingly.
