Awarded for his actions during Operation Michael, which took place at the Demyansk salient in the time period 27.09.-09.10.1942. During the attack of the 5. Jäger-Division towards the west, Mühlen and his weak Bataillone launched an attack (on Mühlen’s own initiative) that seized the crossing over the Lowat river. Later, on the 03.10.1942, Mühlen and his men captured Tscherentschizy and was able to eject the fully surprised Soviet forces from the town. By his actions he rendered a time-consuming regrouping unnecessary for the operation as a whole, and so he was recognized appropriately for this.
