The following newspaper excerpt describes why Nolte was awarded the Knight’s Cross…
“Major der Reserve Kurt Nolte… stormed through the inner city and to the harbour of Kerch with a strong assault group of his Bataillon during the final German assault on the city. He and his men occupied the pier and successfully defended it against all attacks of the Bolsheviks. Later, during the siege of Sevastopol, Major Nolte assaulted two of the Fortress’s strongest bulwarks (the ‘Bastion’ and ‘Maxim Gorki’) with his Bataillon. In doing so he significantly contributed to the fall of Sevastopol.”
