06.05.1944: OMaschMt., POW when U-66 was sunk during her 9th patrol, west of the Cape Verde Islands at position 17°17′N 32°29′W by depth charges, ramming and gunfire from Grumman TBF Avenger and Grumman F4F Wildcat aircraft of the US escort carrier 'Block Island' and by the destroyer escort USS 'Buckley' - 24 KIA and 36 survivors captured by destroyer escort USS 'Buckley'.
