“Hauptmann Rudolf Wermter… executed a raid on his own initiative during the fighting southeast of Lake Ilmen back in early September. During this raid he and his small force (consisting of only a few Grenadiers plus a Sturmgeschütz) encountered an enemy battalion that was itself preparing for an attack, and in the fighting which followed he and his troops smashed the enemy force.”
