Awarded for his participation in about 280 bomber sorties as an observer, in which he flew in the west, east and Mediterranean theatres. In this time he and his crew sank a 1500 GRT freighter off the Peloponnese on the 28.04.1941. Later, during the first months of Barbarossa, he and his crew destroyed over 100 vehicles, several artillery positions and 39 aircraft on the ground.
