While the leichten Flak-Abteilung (mot) 89 was attached to the 9. Flak-Division in 1943, it was particularly successful in shooting down Soviet ground attack planes. In the time period 30.05.-02.06.1943 alone the Abteilung destroyed 25 Soviet Il-2s near Moldavanskoe (west of Krymskaya) in the Kuban bridgehead. For this, as well as the Abteilung’s further success in harbour protection duties at Balaklava and at Sevastopol, its commander (Hauptmann Pielmeier) would be decorated with the Knight’s Cross.
