Biography

Mrs. Colleen P. Slaughter, 707 South Ross Avenue, recently attended ceremonies at Camp Hood, Texas, where she received a posthumous Bronze Star Medal with an Oak Leaf Cluster for the "heroic achievement" which her husband, the late Capt. Chester C. Slaughter, made in action against the Germans. The award was presented to her personally by Col. F. B. Delamater, Commanding officer of Camp Hood, Capt. W. B. Koons, adjutant, read the Citation which told of Slaughter's death in action on March 21, 1945.
The Citation received from the War Department, Washington, reads that the award was made for "heroic achievement in military operations against the enemy in Germany. On 16 November, 1944, First Lieutenant Slaughter led his platoon in an attack on a strongly-defended enemy position. Leading the advance across open terrain exposed to intense enemy fire, First Lieutenant Slaughter, by his example of courage and fortitude, inspired his men to the successful attainment of their objective. First Lieutenant Slaughter's devotion to duty reflects great credit upon himself and the military service."
The Citation explains further that Slaughter was awarded the oak leaf Cluster to the medal (which supplants duplication of distinguishing himself in combat in connection with the drive beyond the Roer River). "By dint of his courage, aggressiveness and constant presence with the [illegible scan 30 signs] Slaughter displayed in these actions outstanding qualities of leadership that reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
