"For gallantry in action against the enemy on 13 April 1945 at ****, Germany. When the leading elements of his platoon were held up by heavy enemy automatic weapons and sniper fire, Private First Class Cooke, with complete disregard for his safety, exposed himself in order to man a .50 caliber machine gun. He thus attracted enemy fire and enabled his company to move into position to successfully repel the enemy. His gallantry, daring, initiative and unusual devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon private first class Cooke and the armed forces of the United States."
