In the night of 29 October 1944 six men of the 501st Infantry Parachute Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army, crossed the river Rhine at Heteren in two rubber boats and landed east of Renkum. They slipped through the enemy lines and reached the highway leading from Ede to Arnhem. They during the day. In the following night this patrol captured 32 enemy officers and men, and took them with it across the Rhine to the American Headquarters.
For this ‘incredible patrol’ in the period of 29-31 October, the commanding officer First Lieutnant Hugo S. Sims Jr. awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.
