"As commander of a rifle company Lieutenant Lewis led his men through unexplored and unmapped territory to reach Ambabu, Luzon, Philippine Islands on 19 July 1945. The journey was made under extremely difficult conditions. While leading his company, Lieutenant Lewis drove out numerous groups of the enemy. During the entire mission his company was in constant danger of being encicled by the enemy with no possibility of receiving outside support. Lieutenant Lewis' courage, initiative, leadership and professional skill were largely responsible for the successful completion of the hazardous mission."
