"For gallantry in action on 28 December 1944, in Italy. While standing solitary guard at an outpost of his company, Pfc Slaninko observed a five man patrol stealthy approaching his position. He immediately opened fire on the enemy with his rifle and fatally wounded the patrol leader before the remainder of the patrol could fire their weapons. He then threw several hand grenades and his aggressiveness so bewildered the hostile troops that they fled, flinging their weapons away and leaving the dead officer behind. Recovering the hostile weapons, Pfc Slaninko then alerted his company for a possible counter-attack. The courage and aggressiveness displayed by Pfc Slaninko were exemplary and a credit to himself and the military service. Home address: Bradenville, Pennsylvania."
