    Biography

    Charles Fotheringham studied Architecture at Glasgow University from 1941-1943 when he also served in the University Senior Training Corps. He was conscripted in 1943, posted to Royal Engineerd Officers Training and commissioned in June 1944. He experienced his first operations with the 3rd British Infantry Division in Belgium and in the Netherlands, repairing roads and bridges and clearing mine fields. He took part in the fierce battles of Operation 'Aintree' during which the Allies suffered heavy losses but captured the strategic region.
    After the war in Europe Fotheringham was sent to Palestine with the 'Empire Mobile Reserve' where he ended his army career in June 1947 and was demobbed in 1948.
    For his civil career he practiced as an Architect and Town Planner in Harlow and Glenrothes and then moved to private practice in Dumfries in 1960. His final move was to Glasgow University in 1979 where he was Assistant Director of Estates until 1996.

    "Lt Fotheringham has displayed continual gallantry and devotion to duty during the past three months. He has always shown himself willing to undertake the most difficult tasks with cheerfulness and confidence.

    On numerous occasions he has been conspicuous for his gallantry. On 27 Feb he carried out the reconnaisance of an important bridge in full view of the enemy who swept it will small arms fire, and dismantled the demolition charges which he found on the bridge. During the initial stages of the RHEINE crossing this officer displayed the utmost courage and determination in laying and blowing charges on the floodbank under continual shell and mortar fire.

    Lt Fotheringham has always exceeded his duty on the performance of tasks allotted to him and has shown on many occasions that his leadership is only excelled by his courage."
