Starting around midday on the 16.08.1944 Kampfgruppe Friedrich, part of the 5. Panzer-Division, began a battle to eliminate a deeply echeloned Soviet Pakfront near Menaciai, located 9 km east of Akmene. By the evening the position had been rolled up after a very hard fight. On this day Feldwebel Lange particularly distinguished himself in the close combat, eliminating nest after nest and bunker after bunker with hand grenades. During the evening he was heavily wounded in action. He would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for his devotion to duty and the results he produced during the course of this engagement.
