On the morning of the 12.09.1944 the Soviets launched a powerful attack against the lines of the 215. Infanterie-Division. A mixed tank-infantry force managed to penetrate through the defenses and reach the observation post of Hauptmann Pfizenmayer.

Pfizenmayer proceeded to assemble all soldiers in his vicinity and halt the Soviet tanks with a variety of close-combat weapons. After this they engaged the Soviet infantry who were following up behind them. Pfizenmayer killed a Soviet commissar and his two escorting infantrymen, however he was then severely wounded himself by a Soviet soldier firing from an adjacent shell crater. However Pfizenmayer continued to prosecute the defensive combat until the Soviet penetration had been dealt with.

He would subsequently receive the Knight’s Cross for this feat.
Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
