Awarded on:
December 1st, 1939
Citation:
"This ship was not armed. She was suddenly attacked at dead of night by an enemy submarine at very short range not far off shore near the Lands End. The U-boat fired from ahead of her on her seaward bow, so that to escape she had to turn towards the land. The Master could not have been blamed for heaving to and abandoning ship.
But he determined at great risk to defy the enemy and at once brought the gun flash astern. The submarine now brought her searchlight to bear, extinguished it, and continued firing. All shots fell very close, but by the bold decision and ready skill of her Master, " Baharistan " made good her escape and anchored safely in Mounts Bay to await daylight."

Civil Division.
Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE)
