On the morning of the 30.08.1941 the Soviets launched a major attack on the 23. Infanterie-Division. In the face of numerous enemy tanks the Infanterie-Regiment 68 was forced to fall back, as the enemy had broken through its II. Bataillon. In response Leutnant Metzger and his Zug of Sturmgeschütze were deployed to the area, and they destroyed several enemy tanks. The next day Leutnant Metzger was deployed around Budka with instructions to defend against enemy attacks. With another Sturmgeschütz he destroyed the bulk of an attacking enemy armoured force (some 18 tanks altogether) and preventing a breakthrough here. Over the next two days the Germans were then able to retake the ground they had lost.

For his role in defeating the Soviet armoured attacks here, a battle which raised his total of destroyed enemy tanks to 17, Leutnant Metzger would receive the Knight’s Cross.
